The Crowd at Myrtle Beach

By on January 17, 2012

There was some verbal hair-pulling at the Fox News-Republican debate last night in Myrtle Beach South Carolina. And some verbal ear-lobe biting and a lot of trash-talking. Romney looked wimpy and apologetic…. and uncomfortable, like he wished he was already at that fund-raiser at the Waldorf Astoria. Do voters really believe this man has a secret plan to rescue the economy? Santorum seemed punchier than in past performances. Huntsman was not missed.  Newt was in his element, giving as good as he got, ready to battle on anything, hoping folks would not think too deeply about what he was saying.

The audience made a lot of noise. It was a tough boisterous crowd that seemed to delight in skating over anything involving the poor, immigrants or social-economic inequality. This group, which looked prosperous and well-fed, seemed angry and spoiling for a fight. That made them a natural match for Newt. I hope someone escorted questioner Juan Williams back to his car. It was that kind of a crowd. That kind of a night.
