The Great Debates Boogey On

By on December 11, 2011

Last night the Republicans held another debate. Like Dancing with the Stars, the field has been shrinking. Like American Idol, we aren’t seeing much that is new. Romney remains the clueless aristocrat. Gingrich the ever-adaptable pitchman. He should be selling Vege-matics or Florida Everglades real estate on late night cable stations.

Perry seem to be selling either Grecian Formula or one of those undetectable hairpieces women seem like to tug in a hot tub. He and Mitt seem to be going follicle for follicle up there each debate. The rest are pretty superfluous.

Is this what the voters really want? Maybe it gets their minds off their troubles to think about making a $10,000 wager against Mitt. Maybe Michele Bachmann’s patronizing tone reminds them of their first grade teacher. Maybe they think one of them is going to turn into a butterfly and fly away mid-debate. There has to be some reason people other than paid pundits are watching this endless pageant.
Certainly it has nothing to do with current realities. No one is up there with new thinking for jobs. No one is addressing personal bankruptcies related to medical bills. No one is addressing health care cost reduction at all, except to say they are against “Obama-care”, whatever they think that is.
In a way, I am sorry the Donald Trump debate is not going to come off, because I would like to see this group get up there and boogey, maybe line dancing or a three-legged race or a quick game of twister. In the absence of a meaningful dialog, it would at least give people different visuals to watch while they are waiting for the foreclosure people to show up.
