Follow Up to Electoral College Piece

By on February 23, 2012

I’ve had a very interesting exchange with reader OldGulph who acquainted me with the progress of the National Popular Vote Effort in the country. This is an effort to work state-by-state to get electors appointed in a fashion that represents the proportional popular vote. It ends winner-take-all contests where all the electoral votes are awarded to the winner. It comes very close to representing the results of the popular election.

OldGulph’s detailed statistics are in the comments section.

The movement is well under way but has some distance to go.  Opponents seem largely to be on the far right. It would not end the electoral college but would come close to respecting the popular will in the electoral college, the desired outcome. Changing the constitution is a long and frustrating process. Just ask anyone associated with the Equal Rights Amendment of the 1970’s.

My thanks to OldGulph to bringing this to my attention. I have read the arguments on his links against and they don’t hold water. I am uncertain how confidence OldGulph is in this movement’s ultimate success, but certainly it deserves (our) popular support. Look it up on Facebook at nationalpopularvoteinc.
