By on February 7, 2012

This will be the 51st post at this site since we started. It feels like a milestone. This morning we still feel like beginners, but beginners with a feel for the track. That does not mean we will not stumble. It means we know what it feels like hitting the ground.

Here are ten things we have learned:

1. Keep writing. Good days, bad days, bright days, grey days. It is important to keep it going and keep it flowing.

2. We were warned about getting a lot of nasty, trashy comments but so far, in spite a few head-scratchers, the tone has been surprisingly positive. We try to answer each one. Yes, there has been spam. Are people really buying sex performance enhancements from spammers? If these products  are so great why do sellers need to be so aggressive and intrusive? Perhaps the topic of a new blog.

3. If we have lost any friends so far, I am not aware of it. They are important to helping you get going. And they generally have better things to do with their lives than read your posts. This poses a dilemma. We would like to get some good discussions going on the material being posted.

4. Pictures add a lot. Videos will soon follow. We adopted a ‘wade into the water’ approach. We are now above our ankles. Barely.

5. Write what you know and stick to it. It was tempting to write about the Superbowl and some day we will, but only when someone with something different to say comes along.

6. Writing takes time. Good writing takes more time. Give it time.

7. Be patient. Unless you have Arianna Huffington’s millions behind you, building a readership takes time. Even Arianna did not deliver her Post fully formed the first day. I keep telling myself that. Some days I get impatient from being so patient.

8. Be creative and stretch yourself. Tired writing on very familiar topics is not very alluring. We are trying to give it a different slant.

9. Be open to suggestions. Tomorrow TG is having lunch with a fellow blogger. He will have a lot of questions. Hopefully she will have some answers.

10, Be a reader. It seems sometimes that we have become a nation of writers, not readers; talkers, not listeners. Why should anyone pay any attention to you if you do not listen to them. We resolve to do more of this starting with #52.

This Post is determined to get better and supply material that people will enjoy reading. We want it to be rewarding, worthwhile. If you have any suggestions or tips to pass on, we are ready and eager to hear them. We are looking to expand our staff of writers as well. Guest posts upcoming.

Stay with us and watch for more on the Press’s upcoming first book. And more of that listening and reading stuff too.
