New Year’s Resolutions

By on December 31, 2011

It’s dangerous but I am posting a few resolutions for the new year. OK, my track record for sticking to them in past years is pretty embarrassing. Otherwise I would be thinner, better educated and less of a pain in the neck to my wife and friends.

At the top of the list is beating the drum in 2012 for an intelligent discourse on the problems we are facing in health care in this country. This year we saw a lot of nuttiness and some duplicity. Health Care is a major economic problem in this country. We need to treat it seriously.  There are only four measurements that are worth discussion as regards it: Cost, Access, Quality and Humanitarian aspects. Much is being written about the first three. Much is being said privately about the last.

I fear real improvement will only come if  voters demand it. So far they are feeling overwhelmed and confused by the sheer number of issues out there. Pocketbook issues are first in line. Health care should be considered a pocketbook issue. It is also tied to employment a major concern in this country.

What we want to hear less about is the politics of this, what’s-in-it-for-me, pledges to lobbyists,  and religious quirks. I respect people’s ability to believe what they want, as long as it does not interfere in the lawful life of others.

So here’s my list:

1. Honest talk

2. More facts

3. As apolitical as possible

4. As areligious as possible

5. Civil discussions.

One of the first of number 5 might be a discussion of whether health care should be rationed out according to actual need or ability to pay? Right now the system is moving toward the latter. Is the country in favor of this?

Screamers need not apply.

I hope to set an example this year for civil dialogue. Will you join me?
