Insurance Exchanges

By on January 7, 2012

Last month the Kaiser Family Foundation surveyed Americans on their opinions about the insurance exchanges set up by the Health Reform Act.  It turns out 75% of Independents and 62% of Republicans report that they feel very favorable or somewhat favorable about insurance exchanges. That again seems to throw into doubt the wisdom of a Republican strategy of repealing health care reform.

On the other hand it is interesting to note that one group who is flirting with repeal is seniors. About 50% have unfavorable feelings about reform. Is this because they don’t want their children to have benefits? Probably not. What they do fear is that this will be done with take-aways from medicare which they already have. Republicans have been rather noisy about dealing with entitlements like Medicare and Medical as part of balancing the federal budget, their leading priority this past Congressional term.

This debate should not come down to whose ox will be gored in the future, but rather what do we as a country want to do to ensure affordable health care for working Americans. If Republicans succeed in spooking seniors, it will set reform back years. Time for the voices of reform to set the record straight for seniors.

Hopefully lobbyists like AARP will not let the nay-sayers reduce the argument to this level of absurdity.
