Honest Booing?

By on July 12, 2012

I read today that Mitt Romney. still the Thomas E Dewey of the modern Republican Party, went before the NAACP and got a civil reception until he got to the topic of Health Care Reform. Reports are that he flew in some Conservative black supporters (well-paid?) as a kind of claque to give him Dutch courage and then reported later that he had spoken to black ‘attendees who were unhappy with Obama.’ Romney needs to work on his snake-oil sales techniques. The crowd is not supposed to get wise to the flim-flam at the actual event. Karl Rove, you need to step in here.

Some ultra-Conservative flacks reported it was a moment of disrespect but in fact a fair listening of the whole speech reveals he did not draw negative reactions until he got to the topic of Health Care Reform when he came out with the knee-jerk slogan of ‘repealing Obamacare’ which the right-wing seems to love. Then the boo-birds rightly began to sound and stopped the speech. Here was the architect of reform in Massachusetts again trying to sound like Attila the Hun of the status quo. How stupid does he think people are?

Can anyone blame attendees for feeling their intelligence was again being insulted? Who is advising this man? The person who whitens his teeth periodically? Someone, maybe H L. Menken, said you can never go wrong underestimating the intelligence of the electorate here in the US.  That was back in the Roaring Twenties. The Romney-ites seem dedicated to finding out the veracity of this statement in the new millennium. A full court press to locate the truth is now in play. The convention is still ahead. Are any Republicans having buyers remorse at this point? You’ve got to wonder.
