THE FIRST PANCAKE
As Executive Editor of the Press and the Post, I wanted to start out saying something undeniably brilliant , insightful, full of wisdom and insight, momentous, resonant — the verbal equivalent of the thousand points of light President Bush 41 always used to talk about — all rolled up into one pithy piece of deathless communication.
I typed the title in great anticipation and then—- a big raspberry.
Great thoughts always seem much better while they are still in your head. They look far more mundane on the page, if not downright puny.
Did Benjamin Franklin have this problem? Shakespeare? H.L. Menken? Samuel Johnson, Dr. Seuss for God’s sake?
Does Thomas Friedman clutch up? It doesn’t seem so. Did Alastair Cooke or William F. Buckley?
We posted nine more items before I got back to this. Brilliant insights still fail me. Walter Lippmann rests safely tonight.
Oh well. It’s the just first pancake off the grill. Maybe a little syrup and lots of butter will disguise its pathetic shortcomings.
